I would suggest using one anyway, even if it's just for the incremental backup. Depending on how many files you have, this may take a whole night. At least my Airport Extreme was found directly via WLAN by the AirPort utility. However, I'm glad to hear that this setup works for you - I heard horrific stories about using anything but "Alice hardware" with Alice's lines.
