I wrote just a few days ago about my purchase of a HTC Touch Diamond 2. I really like this phone and fully aware that the new Iphone namely 3GS (S for speed) would be available soon afterwards, I bought it, thinking I could avoid buying the Iphone for yet another year. Now the Iphone 3GS is available as well and it’s as great as the Iphones before. Maybe even better due to an increase regarding the hardware specs. No argument about the design, the functionality and the apps, but what about the contract-thing? Why does Apple insists on the contract, not allowing the phone to be sold freely? I’m aware that they make money through the contracts with AT&T, Vodafone and O2 as well, but why not increase the sales of a phone by making it available for potential customers that have a contract with everything they need but a good phone? This really bugs me and I try to understand it throughout but fail repeatedly. Though it seems possibly to get the Iphone 3GS from other countries, avoiding the Simlock and Netlock, no warranty will be available other than in the country where the phone was purchased. Not even the ProtectionPlan from Apple will do this for the Iphone. This must reserve the Iphone a lonely spot between other Apple products, which all seem to have a worldwide warranty once the ProtectionPlan was purchased.
The big question for me is now, whether or not this device is worth the hassle and risk. I have seen various apps that sure would make my life as a blogger, Twitter/Facebook-user and internet fanatic easier. A lot of other applications such as navigation software and to be honest, little – mostly useless but fun – applications and games speak for the phone. I’ll think about this for the next two weeks or so and you will see whether I bought one or not by the change of my topics from HTC Diamond 2 to Iphone 3GS.
I’ll keep you posted about my thoughts related to this decision and hope you can support me by telling me about your ups and downs with or without the Iphone.
Update: I’m still not sure whether or not I should get the new Iphone, but weirdly enough I simply will buy one. I’m usually the kind of guy that reads about every little detail and watches every review/test on youtube & co. Based on that, I will then decide if it’s worth the money or not. While this will be my first Iphone, you won’t find me clapping about a 3mp camera that can record videos or other features that visitors of the WWDC love like a fat kid loves cake. (If that wasn’t helping you to visualize my thoughts, then I don’t know what.
) My Nokia could do that years ago and my current HTC Touch Diamond 2 (which soon will end up on ebay) can even do that with its 5mp camera.
I’m also not one of the ‘fanboys’ that run around and hype everything regardless it’s actual value to humankind, just because it says Apple on the package. That said, Apple does have good products and I will hardly want to start a fight about whether or not Apple is worth the money, I’m just saying. Well back to my planned purchase. The Iphone doesn’t have some features other phones have since years, but then again, I laughed about the inability to send MMS, but then I thought about how often I send one; next to Christmas and once in a while on holiday, I actually hardly use it at all. I’m saying this because I want to have a phone that serves me well in what I do, not a phone that does everything a little. Seeing how more and more software that would save me time appears on the AppStore, I decided to go for it and get the Iphone.
I will keep you posted on what’s happening, but until I get my new gadget, I will continue my promised posts about Windows Mobile and furthermore add tips, tricks and tweaks for it.
